Toyota plans Vehicle Assembly Plants in Maharashtra

What Happened Toyota plans to build three vehicle assembly plants in Maharashtra with a combined investment of ¥300 billion ($1.9 billion). The facilities will triple India production capacity to one million units by the 2030s. The first plant starts operations in 2029, with the remaining two following through the early 2030s.

Why It Matters The Maharashtra plants are built to export — primarily to Middle East and Africa markets, with Mumbai port proximity driving site selection. Production will include plug-in hybrid vehicles. Once fully operational, India becomes Toyota’s fourth-largest production base globally, after Japan, China, and the US.

Industry Context Global automakers are redirecting investment from stagnating markets toward high-growth emerging economies. Rival Suzuki opened a Haryana plant in 2025 and has a Gujarat facility slated for 2029. India’s consumer scale, competitive manufacturing costs, and improving infrastructure are pulling sustained OEM commitment . Also the downstream effect on ancillary industries and employment is considerable.

Our Take Splitting capacity between domestic-focused southern plants and export-oriented western facilities is a deliberate strategy and  not just geography. Toyota is running two distinct India mandates in parallel, reducing concentration risk while tailoring logistics to specific market destinations.
