Government of India Approves Two Semiconductor Projects in Gujarat

What Happened The Union Cabinet has approved two semiconductor projects in Dholera, Gujarat. The first, from Crystal Matrix Limited, will be India’s first commercial Mini/Micro-LED display manufacturing plant built on GaN technology. The second is a semiconductor packaging facility. Combined investment stands at approximately ₹3,936 crore, with 2,230 skilled jobs projected across both projects.

Context India’s semiconductor mission has been steadily building momentum. With 12 projects now approved and cumulative investments approaching ₹1.64 lakh crore, the programme spans chip design, fabrication, and packaging. The government has also extended design infrastructure support to 315 academic institutions and 104 startups. Two projects have already reached commercial shipment stage.

Why It Matters GaN-based compound semiconductor fabrication represents a different technology segment from mainstream silicon manufacturing. Crystal Matrix’s plant will be India’s first commercial facility of this kind, adding genuine technical breadth to the country’s semiconductor base rather than simply adding volume in established categories.

Our Take Going after segments where global supply chains are still forming — rather than competing head-on with entrenched silicon fabs — is a strategically sound entry point for India. Dholera is fast becoming the anchor location for the country’s advanced manufacturing ambitions, and GaN display fabrication is exactly the kind of differentiated bet the semiconductor mission needs to build long-term relevance.
