What Happened Alstom’s ARGOS digital interlocking system went live at Montbard station near Dijon . It is the first operational deployment of third-generation railway signalling built jointly with SNCF Réseau since the partnership launched in 2018. The installation covers a 30-kilometre stretch between Nuit-sous-Ravières and Les Laumes.
Why It Matters The system enables real-time communication between trackside equipment and centralised network control centres and it replaces the conventional relay-based infrastructure with IP-based smart object controllers. This cuts cabling requirements, reduces maintenance costs, and clears the path for ERTMS-based speed control on the Paris-Lyon high-speed corridor to handle growing traffic.
Industry Context Digital interlocking is a structural shift in railway signalling -from physical relay logic to distributed, software-driven architectures. Nearly 400 Alstom engineers across Saint-Ouen, Villeurbanne, and Mignières spent five years on development and deployment.
