Enerkem

Founded in 2000, Enerkem operates from Montreal as a cleantech company specialising in converting non-recyclable municipal solid waste and biomass into biofuels and circular chemicals through a proprietary thermochemical gasification process. Products include bio-methanol, cellulosic ethanol, and renewable chemicals such as dimethyl ether, supporting hard-to-abate sectors including aviation and marine fuels. Operating facilities include a commercial demonstration plant in Edmonton, Alberta (running since 2014), and the Varennes Carbon Recycling (VCR) biorefinery now under construction in Quebec, on track to produce 125 million litres of methanol annually by 2025. Partnerships with Shell, Suncor, Repsol, and Technip Energies drive global expansion across Canada, Spain, and the Netherlands, aligning with net-zero goals and circular-economy principles.
