Enerkem

Enerkem, set up in 2000, is a Montreal-based cleantech company specializing in converting non-recyclable municipal solid waste and biomass into biofuels and circular chemicals through its proprietary thermochemical gasification technology. The company produces bio-methanol, cellulosic ethanol, and renewable chemicals like dimethyl ether, supporting hard-to-abate sectors such as aviation and marine fuels. Operating facilities include a commercial demonstration plant in Edmonton, Alberta (since 2014), and the Varennes Carbon Recycling (VCR) biorefinery under construction in Quebec, set to produce 125 million liters of methanol annually by 2025. Enerkem’s partnerships with Shell, Suncor, Repsol, and Technip Energies drive global expansion in Canada, Spain, and the Netherlands, aligning with net-zero goals and circular economy principles.
