GPS Renewables begins work on India’s first ethanol-to-jet fuel facility in Andhra Pradesh

What happened:
GPS Renewables has started construction work on an Ethanol-to-Jet Sustainable Aviation Fuel plant in Pudimadaka in Andhra Pradesh. The project was awarded by NTPC Limited under the green hydrogen hub of NTPC Green Energy Limited. The plant is designed to produce 1,800 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel annually using ethanol derived from carbon dioxide.

Why it matters:
The project targets domestic production capacity for sustainable aviation fuel. The execution scope includes engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, hydrogen generation systems, and utility infrastructure. The project timeline extends to March 2029 with an additional year of post-commissioning operations.

Industry context:
The process chain includes ethanol-to-ethylene conversion, olefins oligomerisation, and hydroprocessing for SAF and renewable diesel production. Lummus Technology will provide the ETJ technology licence and basic engineering, while Xytel India will manage detailed engineering. The project adds to India’s expanding renewable fuel and industrial decarbonisation efforts.

Our take:
The project combines renewable fuel production with industrial-scale engineering execution. It also signals growing activity around SAF manufacturing infrastructure in India.
