What happened: Sensory Robotics has received safety certification for its SR-1 system, which lets industrial robots operate near people without protective cages. The certification clears deployment across the United States and Canada. SR-1 combines 3D vision, sensors, and real-time safety software that monitors the area around robotic arms.
Why it matters: Instead of physical barriers, the system creates virtual safety zones that adjust to human movement and machine activity. It can be installed on existing robotic production cells, letting manufacturers retrofit current equipment. It meets expectations as per cULus 1740 and ISO 13849 Performance Level d standards, evaluating responses to equipment failures and safety-function disruptions.
Industry context: Industrial robots are typically fenced off due to their speed and force, and many systems still require barriers to meet safety rules. Removing cages could free floor space, improve workflow flexibility, and cut downtime. It will be interesting to see its response from sectors such as automotive, aerospace, logistics, manufacturing, and defence.
