What Happened Nord Drivesystems has released a new line of decentralized motor starters and variable frequency drives with built-in AS-Interface connectivity. The NORDAC LINK motor starters cover 0.16 to 4.0 hp, the NORDAC LINK VFDs handle 0.5 to 10.0 hp, and the NORDAC FLEX drives extend up to 30.0 hp with a modular build. All units support ASi V2.0 and V3.0 standards and are designed for plug-and-play installation.
Why It Matters Mounting drives near motors rather than in centralised panels cuts cable runs, reduces cabinet space, and simplifies wiring. ASi compatibility means these drives slot into automation systems already running existing networks without replacing the underlying communication infrastructure, which is particularly relevant for retrofit and modernisation projects where minimising disruption determines whether a project is viable at all.
Industry Context Industrial automation is steadily shifting electrical components out of centralised cabinets and onto the factory floor. This decentralised model lowers installation costs and makes future modifications simpler. Several competitors offer decentralised drive platforms, but ASi networks remain particularly common across European manufacturing facilities but backward compatibility with those existing networks is a differentiator that matters specifically in modernisation scenarios rather than greenfield builds.
Our Take Nord is targeting the modernisation segment, where compatibility with legacy systems is often more valuable than cutting-edge features. For plant managers running older ASi networks who want to upgrade drives without a full infrastructure overhaul, this addresses a real need.
