Universal Robots is not treating its seventh-generation cobot as just another hardware upgrade. The Teradyne Robotics company unveiled Gen 7, a redesigned automation platform spanning robot arms, controls, software and operator interfaces. Three new g-Series cobots – the UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300 and UR18g-950 sit at the centre of the launch.
The new platform is built to make robots easier to connect, program and integrate with the growing stack of sensors, vision systems and AI tools entering factories.
Instead of treating sensors and end-of-arm equipment as separate integration problems, Gen 7 brings power, data and safety connections directly to the flange, removing some of the cabling and engineering work that slows down deployment.
Company claims the CB7 Core controller delivers 40% more computing power while taking up 30% less space than the previous generation. It also expands connectivity to systems such as PLCs, HMIs, MES platforms and vision systems.
Gen 7 runs on PolyScope X, with open APIs and support for ROS2, creating a more accessible route for edge-AI and physical-AI applications.
The cobot itself is becoming only one part of the automation product. The competitive advantage is increasingly in how easily that robot can connect to intelligence, perception and software and how quickly manufacturers can turn those capabilities into working production cells. For factories, that could matter more than incremental improvement in payload or speed.
