What happened: ABB expanded its SD200 841 severe-duty motor line to 500 horsepower. The addition of larger NEMA 5000 series frame sizes, covering frames 5009 through 5013, extends the platform beyond its previous 449T frame size. The range now spans 75 to 500 horsepower.
Why it matters: The line meets or exceeds IEEE 841-2021 requirements for efficiency, construction, variable-speed operation, and service life. The motors carry IP56 protection for wet and harsh conditions. Factory-installed terminal blocks are standard on all FS500 motors.
Industry context: The SD200 841 FS500 targets petroleum and chemical plants, pulp and paper mills, mining and aggregates operations, cement facilities, and industrial pumping and conveying. The wider range lets facilities standardize on a single IEEE 841 platform across more equipment, supporting reliability and lower maintenance as power needs grow.
Our take: Extending a proven platform to higher horsepower lets operators consolidate motor specifications, a practical benefit for plants managing large rotating-equipment fleets.
