What happened: Ericsson and Epiroc expanded their alliance to accelerate automation and digital transformation in mining. Epiroc will deploy Ericsson’s enterprise technology for mining customers worldwide.
Why it matters: Epiroc will offer Ericsson’s LTE and 5G connectivity as part of its digital portfolio for surface and underground mines. The connectivity serves as a foundation for automation, remote operations, and predictive maintenance. Epiroc will integrate Ericsson’s Private 5G with its own telematics, vendor-agnostic remote-control systems, and situational awareness and collision-avoidance tools.
Industry context: The expansion is to cater to rising demand for resilient operational technology networks as mining firms pursue safety, productivity, and sustainability gains. The two had come together earlier to explore applying LTE and 5G in mining.
Our take: Routing Ericsson’s networks through Epiroc’s integration channel ties wireless infrastructure directly to mining equipment, lowering the deployment barrier for connected and autonomous operations.
