In industrial plants, AI is increasingly transforming from an analytics tool to an operational tool. Rather than providing data on dashboards, the latest generation of AI solutions is supposed to keep an eye on equipment, understand plant conditions, detect abnormalities and suggest corrective actions to the operators’ workflows. The changeover is getting utilities and process industries to be more efficient at their plants, and cutting down the work of overworked plant staff.
Emerson has followed suit, adding five new intelligent AI agents for the power and water industries to its Ovation AI portfolio. The agents can be deployed within the Ovation Automation Platform 4.0 and continuously process plant data, providing operators with contextual suggestions for operations, maintenance, alarm management and process optimization, all without having to switch
between multiple software applications.
The first portfolio features AI agents like sequence troubleshooting, alarm prioritization, predictive maintenance, root cause analysis, and control loop performance monitoring. The system is not meant to replace operators to make decisions, but rather follows a human-in-the-loop method that gives plant personnel the opportunity to see and approve recommendations before they make a decision.
Industry context
Industrial automation is moving beyond the era of merely using AI on top of control systems and into systems where AI is a component of the control system. With operational data from power plants, water utilities and process industries continuously being generated, operators are more and more facing the issues of alarm overload, staffing problems, aging infrastructure and increasing system complexity.
To meet these challenges, automation vendors are creating smart software agents that can monitor the plant’s performance continuously, identify problems early on and suggest solutions to address them in real time. These AI-based features are assisting businesses to shift from reactive maintenance to predictive and condition-based operations, and enhancing the speed and uniformity of their decision-making processes.
The incorporation of AI agents also mirrors the general trend in industrial automation, with AI handling routine monitoring, diagnostics, and optimization, while human operators still manage the crucial decision-making processes. From Emerson to Siemens, ABB to Schneider Electric, Honeywell to Rockwell Automation, companies from all parts of the automation ecosystem are turning to AI to enhance plant resilience, asset reliability and operational efficiency.
