Eaton’s New Advantor AMT Family Targets the Efficiency Gap in Commercial Trucks

Commercial vehicle makers are under pressure to cut fuel use and operating costs without making drivetrains harder to build or maintain. Eaton is positioning its new Advantor automated manual transmission (AMT) family as one answer.

Eaton’s Mobility segment is showcasing the Advantor range covering 6-, 8- and 10-speed transmissions for light-, medium- and medium-heavy-duty trucks and buses.

Advantor combines an electronically controlled shifter, pneumatic clutch actuation and an intelligent transmission control unit that continuously adjusts shift behaviour based on vehicle load, road conditions and driver inputs.

Eaton claims fuel-efficiency gains of up to 10% compared with manual transmissions and up to 20% compared with traditional automatics. Features such as Load-Based Shifting, Smart Gear Selection, Hill Start Aid and Engine Overspeed Protection are designed to improve shift quality while reducing drivetrain stress and component wear.

The three transmissions are aimed at distinct commercial vehicle segments as Eaton tries to give OEMs a drivetrain that can be tuned across applications without creating a completely different transmission strategy for every vehicle.
