Turning lignin, an abundant biopolymer from forest and agricultural residues, into a renewable thermoplastic called Renol is the mission of Lignin Industries AB, a greentech company in Knivsta, Sweden. Its patented technology replaces fossil-based plastics, cutting CO2 emissions by as much as 100% in applications such as LDPE films (for example e-commerce bags), polypropylene, and ABS for electronics, construction, automotive, and packaging customers. As a drop-in masterbatch, Renol blends up to 40% with recycled or virgin polymers, suits existing equipment, and stays fully recyclable. The first production plant sits in Knivsta, with scalability and partnerships with European film producers and compounders in view. The company raised 3.9M euros in 2025 to speed commercialization, works with brands such as Scania, holds environmental certifications, and has been recognized at events such as the Marcus Wallenberg Prize Symposium.
