Amazon Robotics, part of Amazon's Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics (FTR) division, was founded as Kiva Systems in 2003 and acquired by Amazon in 2012 for $775M. Headquartered in North Reading, Massachusetts, it designs autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) such as Proteus (introduced in 2022) and Vulcan (2025, with tactile AI for stowing), along with systems such as Hercules and Sequoia for warehouse automation. Its robotic management software uses AI, machine learning, and path-planning algorithms to optimise order fulfilment. Serving Amazon's global fulfilment centres, the division operates in logistics and e-commerce, with more than 750,000 robots deployed by 2025 and over 1M jobs created. Employing roughly 2,000-3,000 staff, it works with vendors and integrates technologies such as object recognition and language perception.
