What happened: ABB announced a $200 million investment in medium-voltage manufacturing across Europe over three years. The program includes a $100 million facility in Dalmine, Italy for SF₆-free switchgear and breakers. Another $100 million will expand facilities in Bulgaria, Finland, Germany, Norway and Poland.
Why it matters: Electricity demand is only growing from all corners, from utilities, industry and data centers across Europe. ABB targets expanded production of gas-insulated switchgear, vacuum interrupters and protection relays. The expansion aims to improve availability and shorten lead times for grid equipment.
Industry context: The International Energy Agency projects electricity’s share of final energy consumption will rise from around 20 percent today to nearly 30 percent by 2030. Data center growth and AI workloads add unpredictable, energy-intensive loads to power networks. SF₆-free technologies address regulatory pressure as the gas has global warming potential estimated to be thousands of times greater than CO₂.
Our take: Accelerating electrification and data centre expansion has added tremendous pressue on the current infrastructure. Lead times for medium-voltage equipment have stretched industry-wide, making capacity expansion a competitive differentiator.
