India’s First Chip Plant Gets Official Green Light at Dholera

India has taken a definitive step toward semiconductor self-reliance. The central government has formally notified a 66-hectare Special Economic Zone at Dholera, Gujarat, paving the way for country’s first Tata Semiconductor’s chip fabrication plant.

The production is expected to begin around 2027 and an estimated 21,000 jobs on the line. The SEZ notification unlocks a package of incentives including  tax relief, duty-free imports, and streamlined approvals; this will help where cost structures and regulatory timelines make or break projects.

Dholera, India’s first greenfield smart city offers the clean water, reliable power, and transport infrastructure that chip manufacturing demands. On-site customs clearance through its Inland Container Depot status adds another operational edge.

The facility is expected to pull in equipment makers, chemical suppliers, and component vendors — the surrounding ecosystem that transforms a single factory into a manufacturing cluster.

The government has also lowered the minimum land threshold for semiconductor SEZs from 50 to 10 hectares last year — a policy shift that signals intent to make more such projects viable.
