Increasingly, the technology that drives robots, drones and autonomous industrial systems is the object of increased interest rather than the robots themselves. Indian deeptech start-up Adiabatic Technologies is in the game in this area having raised Rs 8.3 crore in seed funding for the development and manufacturing of advanced lithium-ion battery systems for robotics, defence, drones and industrial automation.
Established in 2022, the Pune and Ahilyanagar- based firm is specializing in creating customized battery packs for OEMs working under tough conditions where reliability and safety are paramount, along with smart chargers and its own battery management system (BMS). The company, according to its own claim, has already sold its battery systems to over 25 OEMs in the areas of robotics, defence, agriculture, electric mobility and renewable energy applications.
The new investment will help Adiabatic increase its annual manufacturing capacity to 100 MWh, grow its engineering team, and speed up product development. The company is also investing in specialized battery platforms for autonomous mobile robots (AMR), industrial automation equipment and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in line with the increasing demand from the Indian automation market.
As opposed to many battery producers, the majority of which assemble imported parts, Adiabatic is taking a gamble on in-house engineering as its major differentiator. From cell selection and battery architecture to thermal management and proprietary BMS software, the company has designed all aspects of a battery system to enable systems that are optimized for applications demanding rapid charging, high power output and reliability in extreme operating conditions.
The funding also represents a wider trend throughout industrial automation. Batteries are becoming a key enabler technology instead of a standard product, as Physical AI, robotics and autonomous systems are becoming more prominent. From robots in warehouses, inspection drones, defence platforms, to smart industrial equipment, manufacturers are looking for battery systems which provide extended battery life, rapid charging and intelligent energy management.
Such advancements are a testament to an essential change in the robotics and automation sector in India, which is rapidly expanding. Developing high impact automation technologies that compete on the global market will be driven by advances in AI and robotics, as well as building up domestic expertise in key technologies like batteries, power electronics and energy management systems that will keep intelligent machines operating in real-world industrial conditions.
