Construction robotics has largely been a technology story so far. IIT Madras and Bechtel India want to push it closer to the jobsite.
The two have launched a ₹3.30-crore robotics laboratory at the IIT Madras campus, with CSR support from Bechtel India. The lab will focus on robotics, automation and advanced construction technologies, with the aim of turning research into solutions that can be tested against real construction problems.
Bechtel will bring engineering, procurement and construction experience into the research programme, while IIT Madras will provide the academic and technical base. The partnership is expected to support joint research, consulting projects, prototypes, patents and technology demonstrations.
Construction remains heavily dependent on manual work, while projects are becoming more complex and labour-intensive. Robotics can potentially take on tasks that are repetitive, hazardous or difficult to execute consistently.
Bechtel itself is expanding its focus on AI, automation and robotics across engineering and construction. The company created an enterprise-wide EPC transformation role in 2026 to bring these technologies into project delivery.
The collaboration is aimed at developing systems around actual construction workflows. That could include testing robotic concepts, validating them in practical settings and eventually moving promising technologies towards deployment.
