What happened: ABS and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering signed an MOU to collaborate on digital technologies for shipbuilding. The agreement establishes a framework for Digital Threads work across the vessel value chain. Focus areas include digital engineering, autonomous vessel systems, and integrated cybersecurity tools.
Why it matters: The partnership will explore 3D model-based approval and trusted data exchange between shipyard and classification society. The collaboration examines integration between HD KSOE’s Software Defined Vessel architecture and ABS Wavesight platform. Both organizations will jointly develop cybersecurity and data safety guidelines for autonomous vessel environments.
Industry context: The agreement extends existing IACS requirements to address threats facing next-generation autonomous fleets. The partnership will develop digital engineering standards spanning the entire vessel lifecycle- supporting global certification processes for digital shipbuilding implementations.
Our take: Fragmented digital tools to integrated data flows across shipbuilding operations with emphasis on 3D model-based approval and software-defined vessel architectures suggests the maritime industry is adopting patterns from automotive and aerospace sectors where digital twins and model-based engineering are established practices.
