Solex Energy Signs MOU with Gujarat Government

What Happened Surat-based Solex Energy has signed an MoU with the Gujarat Government to build two large-scale manufacturing facilities in the state. The first is a 5 GW solar cell plant, coming up in two phases .The second is a 10 GW battery energy storage system manufacturing facility. The investment is worth ₹4,000 crore. The company currently runs 4 GW of module manufacturing capacity at Tadkeshwar.

Context India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem has a structural imbalance — module capacity has grown rapidly, but upstream cell production remains heavily import-dependent, largely from China. At the same time, grid-scale battery storage is increasingly central to renewable energy deployment, as intermittent solar generation requires stabilisation infrastructure. Both gaps have attracted significant policy attention under India’s Production Linked Incentive schemes and state-level investment drives.

Why It Matters Solex currently imports solar cells to feed its module lines. Adding BESS manufacturing alongside it means the company is positioning itself across both ends of the renewable energy equation –  generation hardware and grid storage  under one roof.

Our Take Building cells and storage systems together indicates  that Solex sees vertically integrated manufacturing as the competitive moat going forward. Gujarat continues to be the preferred destination for India’s clean energy industrial buildout.
