What happened: AmpereHour Energy and IndiGrid commissioned a 180 MW/360 MWh standalone Battery Energy Storage System at a GETCO substation in Gujarat. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam serves as the off-taker. The project is India’s largest standalone utility-scale BESS installation and among Asia’s largest battery storage capacities.
Why it matters: Gujarat has launched 870 MW of battery storage capacity projects state-wide. The system further stabilizes Gujarat’s grid and enables 24/7 renewable energy supply. The project demonstrates how battery technology addresses grid intermittency at commercial scale.
Industry context: Battery energy storage systems are critical infrastructure for India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity target by 2030. Large-scale standalone BESS projects enable renewable integration without generation-linked dependencies. Gujarat leads Indian states in battery storage deployment.
Our take: The project’s approach to optimizing electrical architecture sets a technical benchmark for future large scale utility deployments.
