German automation giant Beckhoff has upgraded its EtherCAT terminal lineup with the ED series, bringing tool-free installation and smartphone diagnostics to industrial control systems. The new terminals maintain full backward compatibility while introducing design changes aimed at faster commissioning.
The ED series features push-in connection technology that eliminates the need for screwdrivers during wiring. Each terminal includes a data matrix code that links to diagnostic information through a mobile app, allowing technicians to troubleshoot without manuals or laptops.
Beckhoff has redesigned the housing while keeping the same form factor and DIN rail mounting system used since 2003. The terminals integrate with existing EtherCAT infrastructures without requiring changes to communication protocols or control software.
The upgrade targets reduction in installation time and maintenance complexity. Terminals feature uniformly arranged LED indicators for quick status checks in control cabinets. The consistent design across the product line simplifies inventory management and spare parts planning. Beckhoff reports that system costs decrease while performance remains unchanged – despite the enhancement and the added features . The IP20-rated terminals support the same signal types, channel densities, and fieldbus integrations as previous generations.
Engineering teams can mix ED series terminals with existing equipment in the same terminal station. The pluggable wiring level option allows entire connector assemblies to be removed from the top without disturbing surrounding components during service.
