America’s largest shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) and Graymatter Robotics signed an MOU to explore integration of Physical AI into shipbuilding operations.
The companies will work to pursue opportunities in areas like Autonomous ship building , integration possibilities of GMR technologies with other shipbuilding technologies , Worker safety and training to extend automation to get to scaling of unmanned system production . The partnership will bring autonomous surface preparation, coating, and inspection technologies into shipbuilding.
HII has already made heavy large investments in automation at its shipyards but they are currently limited to fewer sets of repeatable activities, Ai can extend support to critical processes as sandblasting, grinding and coating which would help improve consistency and operational efficiency along with shortening the delivery timelines.
HII delivers world’s most powerful ships and all-domain mission technologies, including unmanned systems, to U.S. and allied defence customers globally, Graymatter Robotics is building factory superintelligence and has also worked with US navy directly on several projects.
