Arrow Rolls Out SPE Reference Platform for Industrial Networks

Arrow Electronics has launched a new evaluation board designed to accelerate Single Pair Ethernet adoption in industrial settings. The 10BASE-T1S REF_SPE_T1S reference design, developed with Microchip Technology, Bourns, and Amphenol, targets the magnetic interface challenge that determines SPE network performance.

The platform centers on Microchip’s LAN8670 10BASE-T1S PHY paired with Amphenol’s IEC 63171-6 compliant SPE connector. Bourns’ integrated isolation transformer and common-mode choke magnetics handle the critical physical layer connection between data and cable, addressing electrical noise common in factory environments.

Engineers can use the USB-powered platform to evaluate signal integrity, EMC behavior, and noise immunity before finalizing designs. The board enables direct comparison between transformer-based and capacitor isolation methods while measuring network stability in point-to-point and multidrop configurations.

Industrial applications like factory automation, HVAC systems, and building controls stand to benefit from the design’s noise rejection capabilities. The approach provides margin against electrical interference while supporting EMC compliance requirements.

As IIoT deployments expand, SPE positions itself as a modern replacement for legacy serial protocols like CAN and RS-485, bringing native Ethernet connectivity to edge sensors and actuators without complex gateways.
