Cybersecurity is becoming a product-design requirement for industrial automation, not something manufacturers can bolt on after a machine is built. Elmo Motion Control is strengthening its position on that front with IEC 62443-4-1 Maturity Level 2 certification for its Secure Product Development Lifecycle.
IEC 62443-4-1 focuses specifically on secure product development, covering security practices across the development lifecycle rather than the cybersecurity features of one individual product.
For Elmo, the process includes threat analysis during product design, mandatory code peer reviews, security testing before release and a formal system for handling vulnerabilities and issuing patches after products reach customers. The company says the certification gives machine builders and system integrators independent evidence of how security is managed during development.
As servo drives and motion-control systems become more connected to industrial networks. A vulnerability in a component controlling motors or motion can have consequences beyond data theft, potentially affecting machine operation and production.
Elmo says its IEC 62443-4-1 certification supports CRA preparation. More importantly, it signals a shift in how automation suppliers are approaching product security: threat modelling, testing, vulnerability response and secure maintenance are becoming part of the product lifecycle itself.
For machine builders, the certification provides another factor to consider when assessing the cybersecurity practices of motion-control suppliers, not just the capabilities of the drive or controller itself.
