India’s industrial decarbonisation pipeline is moving from ambition towards execution, with the Industrial Transition Accelerator (ITA) selecting 11 Indian projects for targeted support under its India Project Support Programme. The projects represent more than $18 billion in potential investment and could deliver over 7.8 million tonnes of annual carbon abatement once implemented.
The figure is potential investment, not funding committed by the ITA. Its role is to help projects overcome commercial and structural barriers, create demand for lower-emission products and move them closer to final investment decisions. The portfolio cuts across some of the hardest industrial sectors to decarbonise: steel, chemicals, aviation and shipping. More than 70% of the selected pipeline is concentrated in green ammonia and green methanol, highlighting where India is seeking to leverage its renewable-energy base to build new industrial supply chains.
Among the projects, Jindal Steel is developing a CCUS facility at its integrated steel plant in Angul, Odisha, with captured carbon intended for products including methanol, ethanol, polycarbonates and mineralised materials. JSW Steel, working with Carbon Clean and BHP, is evaluating technology that could capture up to 100,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually at its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka.
In Uttar Pradesh, Circular Urban Energy is developing a waste to sustainable aviation fuel project near Jewar, designed to process around 3,500 tonnes of waste a day. The significance of the ITA selection is less about a headline investment figure and more about what comes next: turning technically viable clean-industry projects into bankable projects capable of reaching construction and commercial operation. India’s transition will ultimately be measured not by the size of its project pipeline, but by how many of these projects cross that line.
The ITA says it is currently supporting 39 projects across India, Brazil, the UAE and Egypt, representing $60- 65 billion in investment potential.
