The growth of decarbonizing energy intensive industries is accelerating and Coolbrook and ABB are developing their partnership from technology development to commercialisation. The two companies have moved to the stage of industrial delivery of the project of installing the Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic Heater (RDH) at the Andhra Pradesh-based Boyareddypalli Integrated Cement Plant (IPL), which is a part of Adani Cement.
The project is the first industrial-scale application of the RDH technology to replace fossil fuel based heating in high temperature industrial processes using electricity. ABB will provide the electrification solutions for the deployment, such as the motors, drives, switchgear and transformers, as well as a distributed control system (DCS) to assist with the control of the heating technology.
The installation will help to cut the carbon emissions by around 60,000 tonnes a year, as it increases the amount of alternative and renewable fuels used in the cement manufacturing process. One of the most energy intensive processes in the cement manufacturing process has been traditionally based on fossil fuels, and it is one of the main emission sources in the cement sector.
Industry context
Cement production is one of the main sectors where carbon emissions are important and significant, and is a target for decarbonization. In years gone by, the industry has been investigating other fuels and energy efficient solutions, but high-temperature heat electrification is becoming one of the most promising solutions to the emissions challenge without sacrificing production performance.
The initiative Coolbrook-ABB is exemplifying a trend for intelligent process technologies to be combined with industrial electrification and automation. With the increasing availability of renewable power and the ongoing tightening of climate regulations, manufacturing companies are increasingly considering technologies to limit their reliance on fossil fuels.
