What happened: ArcelorMittal has entered a strategic collaboration with AWS to extend cloud, AI and edge technology across its global steelmaking operations. The company will converge parts of its operational and IT systems on AWS infrastructure.
Why it matters: Using industrial IoT, sensor data and machine learning, ArcelorMittal plans to run AI at the point of production with predictive maintenance, computer-vision quality control, process optimisation and digital twins of assets and production lines. AWS will also build a workforce education programme.
Industry context: The end objective is to improve on safety, asset reliability and energy efficiency across steelmaking sites in 14 countries. Separately, Amazon signed a multi-year supply framework with ArcelorMittal covering structural steel in Europe and the UK, including lower-carbon XCarb steel for Amazon facilities and AWS data centres, supporting Amazon’s 2040 net-zero target.
