China Rolls Out Digital ID Scheme to Track Humanoid Robots End to End

What happened: China is introducing a national digital identification system for humanoid robots, according to state broadcaster CCTV. Each robot receives a unique identity number covering its full lifecycle, from manufacturing and deployment to recycling and disposal.

Why it matters: The scheme is designed to help regulators monitor safety risks and standardise management as the sector scales. More than 28,000 robots across about 200 models have already received digital identities, with rollout spanning over 100 manufacturers.

Industry context: The effort is coordinated by the Humanoid Robotics and Embodied Intelligence Standardisation body under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Each code carries a two-digit cross-border identifier, a four-digit manufacturer code, a six-digit product classification, and a 17-digit serial number. Firms including Unitree, GigaAI, and Agibot are developing next-generation systems; GigaAI’s SeeLight S1 is set for household pilot testing in Wuhan as early as 2027.
