Wipro Eyes Semiconductor Assembly Amidst National Chip Push

Company is exploring semiconductor manufacturing through the OSAT route—chip assembly, packaging, and testing operations that represent the final stages before chips reach device makers. Discussions remain exploratory, with the company actively scouting technology partners .

The timing is ripe with India’s aggressive semiconductor ambitions. Tata Group is building a ₹27,000 crore OSAT facility in Assam, HCL and Foxconn recently broke ground on a ₹3,700 crore plant in Uttar Pradesh, and Murugappa Group’s CG Semi has opened the first unit of its ₹7,600 crore Gujarat project.

Wipro’s potential entry reflects broader recognition that semiconductor manufacturing offers strategic growth beyond traditional IT services—especially as AI reshapes software business models and creates pressure to diversify.

OSAT demands deep technical expertise, proven global relationships, and ability to achieve tight yield requirements. Without such collaboration, operational efficiency becomes nearly impossible in an industry where margins depend on precision at microscopic scales.
