GAIL Pumps ₹130 Million Into TruAlt’s Compressed Biogas Venture

GAIL India has completed a ₹130 million investment in Leafiniti Bioenergy, TruAlt Bioenergy’s subsidiary, securing a 49% stake while TruAlt retains majority control. The partnership targets compressed biogas production across Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha, addressing India’s reliance on imported natural gas.

Phase 1 rolls out six greenfield plants, each producing 12 tonnes of CBG daily from sugar mill residues. Combined annual output will hit 23,976 tonnes of CBG, displacing roughly 19,800 tonnes of fossil fuels and avoiding 9,300 tonnes of methane emissions. The facilities will also generate 97,902 tonnes of solid organic manure and 470,862 tonnes of liquid organic manure annually, feeding back into agricultural supply chains.

The venture will create jobs, predominantly in rural areas where feedstock sourcing occurs. India currently imports about 50% of its natural gas requirements making CBG a strategic move against price volatility and supply disruptions. The government’s SATAT scheme provides policy support, aiming to establish thousands of CBG plants nationwide.

TruAlt brings operational expertise and feedstock access through its position as India’s largest ethanol producer and first biofuels company to achieve Oil Marketing Company status. GAIL contributes gas marketing capabilities and pipeline infrastructure. The partnership positions both companies to scale rapidly as India targets a 15% gas share in its energy mix by 2030. CBG offers a domestic alternative that converts agricultural waste into transportation fuel while strengthening energy security and rural economies.
