FedEx Deploys Physical AI for Automated Trailer Unloading

FedEx has announced a multi-year collaboration with Berkshire Grey, a subsidiary of SoftBank Group, to deploy AI-enabled robotic package unloading systems. The partnership has resulted in the Scoop robotic unloader, designed specifically to automate trailer unloading operations.

Solving a High-Risk Operational Challenge

Trailer unloading is one of the most physically demanding and unpredictable tasks in parcel logistics. Workers handle packages of varying sizes, weights, and fragility under tight time constraints, increasing safety risks.

The Scoop system automates this task by handling all package types through a continuous flow approach, while allowing human intervention when required. This improves safety, consistency, and throughput.

Physical AI in Action

The system uses physical AI, combining artificial intelligence with robotic hardware capable of operating in real-world environments. Scoop can recognise variable package mixes, make real-time decisions, and manoeuvre safely within trailers.

Key features include:

  • Safety-first design with support for exception handling
  • Continuous inbound flow optimisation
  • Minimal facility modifications for deployment

Deployment Roadmap

A pilot programme is currently underway, with the first systems expected to be operational later in 2026. The phased rollout allows FedEx to validate performance before broader deployment across its network.
