ABB Robotics is leading an industry-wide initiative to develop the first global standard for measuring the energy consumption and efficiency of industrial robots. The initiative aims to improve transparency and support more sustainable manufacturing practices.
Closing a Critical Standards Gap
While many consumer and industrial products have well-defined energy efficiency standards, industrial robots currently lack a global benchmark. This makes it difficult for customers to compare energy performance across robotic systems.
ABB highlights that a standardised measurement framework will enable informed decision-making and help reduce the overall carbon footprint of industrial automation.
Collaborative, Industry-Led Development
ABB Robotics developed the proposal in collaboration with the Swedish Institute for Standardization, along with experts from robot manufacturers and research institutes. The technical specification is designed for global adoption and is scheduled for completion in August 2026.
By involving multiple stakeholders, the initiative aims to ensure that the resulting standard reflects broad industry consensus and remains practical across different robotic applications.
