ABB launches SPR 2025 as its latest release for Symphony® Plus

ABB has rolled out SPR2025, the latest release of its Symphony® Plus distributed control system, aimed at enabling faster modernization across process and power industries without interrupting ongoing operations.

Existing Harmony Rack-based systems can be upgraded online, while new installations can adopt the latest automation stack. The release introduces improved operating system compatibility, virtualization support, and automated conversion tools, allowing phased transitions with minimal operational risk.

A key focus area is connectivity and data integration. System-wide OPC UA implementation, combined with an ethernet-based backbone and support for Field Device Integration (FDI), enables standardized and secure communication across devices and platforms. This improves interoperability across distributed environments while simplifying integration of field instruments.

SPR2025 also introduces Automation Extended functionality, built on a separation of concerns architecture. By isolating control systems from digital applications, operators can deploy analytics, performance monitoring, and AI-driven decision tools without impacting core process reliability or security.

Other upgrades include synchronized version management for smoother system-wide updates, enhanced lifecycle management through multi-OS deployment, and improved device handling via Field Information Manager (FIM). Expanded network capabilities using Virtual Plant Network Interfaces further optimize communication efficiency while reducing system complexity.

Overall, the release strengthens system performance, simplifies lifecycle management, and builds a more flexible and secure automation environment. ABB positions SPR2025 as a step toward enabling industries to modernize at their own pace while staying aligned with evolving digital and automation requirements.
